What makes something erotic?

I got this question the other day and it got me thinking. There are probably, oh, about a million answers or so, but here’s one thing I thing I find essential for erotic writing at least: sex has to matter to the characters, and it has to matter a lot. If they don’t care, well, then I as a reader don’t care either.

How’s that for a negative definition? 🙂
